Kedarkantha Trek is a mesmerizing winter trek. It forces you to submit yourself to the magnanimous peaks of Garhwal Himalayas and attain tranquility which you’ve been searching all these years.The Kedarkantha Trek takes you through the Govind Wild life Sanctuary and National Park in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Kedarkantha boasts so much of natural beauty that it has the prettiest campsites in the Himalayas.Its a mix of Deserted soaring mountains and densely populated pine and oak trees.You rarely get to witness such picture perfect setup for your adventure vacation.
Day 1 Arrive at Sankri.Sankri is approximately 200 km from State capital Dehradun.If you are coming from Delhi, get down at Dehradun and board a taxi which drops you to Sankri.Please note that the transport cost from Dehradun to Sankri will have to be borne by the trekkers.It is recommended that you come in groups so that you can distribute the cost of travel from Point to Point.The total cost of transportation one way is Rs. 5500 which can be shared if you decide to come in groups. It will take approximately 5 hours to reach Sankri from Dehradun.
Day 2 start your day with a fresh breakfast and a talk with trek leader.it is highly recommended that you involve your self actively with the trek leader.With high altitude treks it becomes important that you become aware of the geography around you.Proceed towards Juda-ka-Talab a frozen lake at 9500 ft.It takes 4 hours to reach the campsite besides the lake.The trail to the campsite is equally engaging and beatiful as the campsite itself. As you ascent the you pass through the oak, pine forest, streams flowing down from the high mountains and the sounds of gurgling water is enough to rejuvenate your spirits.After walking for around 4 hours and 4 km in total you reach a opening with a pristine freshwater lake on your left and camps tented on your right. Overnight here at the campsite and indulge in the surroundings.
Rise up early and start your trek towards the Kedarkantha peak base camp.Today’s trek is mostly on the ridge which starts from jadu ka Talab.The trail takes you through densely populated pine and oak forest and open meadows, which mostly might be covered in fresh snow if you decide to trek in winters.It takes you 4 km and and a rise in altitude of somewhere around 2500ft. to reach the base camp.Trekking in these sublime locations makes you feel disconnected from the hustle of the city life and lets you connect with what life is when you are asked to survive in these dreadful conditions. During your trail don't forget to miss out on the shepherd huts, who live a sustainable life in these regions. Approximately in 3 hours you reach the base camp.This is where your cameras get busy.The himalayas open up like a huge arc forming a 180 degree panoramic view. Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, Kala Nag and Ranglana stand tall infront of your eyes it takes you a moment to believe that you’ve been stupid to actually ignore such vacation for all these years. Pat on your back for an intelligent decision.Camp overnight under a blanket of stars, with shooting stars making streaks across the sky wishing you goodnight.
Day 4: Kedarkantha base to Kedarkantha peak; descend to Hargaon camp
Begin your day 4 of the expedition with a fresh tea, breakfast and a sunrise to pump in more adrenaline into your nervous system.The sunrise is beautiful and the snow sparkles to as far as the eyes can see.Don’t wait too long for the euphoria to settle down.Start your journey to the peak.The trail to the summit is gentle through a small patch of oak trees.A few feet short of the summit,spot a temple with lord Ganesh, Shiva and Parvathi idols being cozily installed.Spend some time at the summit and descend back to the base camp by noon for lunch.Post Lunch Descent down for Hargaon Camp.The trail is a gentle descent and takes you through the pine forest. Reach Hargaon camp by evening and camp overnight at night.
Start off early in the morning and descend through the dense forest to reach Sankri. In just less than 3 hours time you’ll reach Sankri. Board a cab and leave for Dehradun.
