While Dayara Bugyal is one of the easiest and popular trekking destination in Uttarakhand, most people don’t know that there is another gem hidden 14 kms beyond Dayara Bugyal, the scenic Gidara Bugyal. You can reach this lush green high altitude meadow by trekking on a gradually ascending but easy trail. The combination of Dayara Bugyal with Gidara Bugyal showcases the best of widespread alpine meadows.
After 45kms drive from Uttarkashi you will reach Barsu, a small village that acts as the commencement point of the trek. Please note that the road to Barsu branches off near Bhatwari.

Uttarkashi is one of the major towns of Uttarakhand thus buses and shared cabs are easily available. This 5-6hrs drive passes through Mussoorie Bypass Road offering scenic views. The massive Tehri Dam Lake also comes into view as you proceed towards Chilianisaur. After a short break at Uttarkashi continue another one and a half hour drive to reach Barsu. If you start from Dehradun at around 6am then you will probably be able to start trekking from Barsu at around 1pm after lunch.
Barsu to Barnala Tal is a short and easy hike of 4kms with gradual ascent in altitude. The well-marked trail begins from the terrace fields of the village and climbs up to the forest entry point, this region is rich in Rhododendron trees. It just takes 2hrs time to reach Barnala Tal from Barsu. There is a good campsite couple hundred meters before the Barnala Tal. One can also camp at Barnala Meadows but that region gets much colder at night and there is not enough protection from wind.
Start from Barnala Tal and walk upto widespread Barnala meadows. 4kms gradually ascending route from Barnala Tal leads to shepherd huts at Dayara Bugyal. If traveling during winters, this might be the perfect camping spot for you because the higher reaches of Dayara Bugyal will be covered with 2-3ft of snow. During remaining time of the year you can trek further to Dayara Bugyal and camp near a water source. The trail starts off with open land of Barnala Meadows, it then enters the forest line at different places and again opens up to the vast expanse of lush green meadow – Dayara Bugyal.
Continue hiking from here to reach Devkund situated at an altitude of 3500mts above sea level. Devkund is a gorgeous campsite with stunning views of Srikanth, Rudragaira, Gangotri Group of Peaks , Jaonli, Draupadi ka Danda, Kala Nag, Bandarpoonch Massif and many others peaks.
Wake up to enjoy the most trail day of this trek. Most of the walk will be on the alpine meadows with constant views of Banderpoonch Massif and other Himalayan peaks. Surya Top is a stunning campsite.
Start off late if the weather is nice and walk further to map the lengths and breadths of Gidara Bugyal. Witness the Himalayan range turning into golden hues during the sunset. Situated at 3800mts above sea level, Gidara Bugyal is one of the hidden jewels of Garhwal Himalayas.
Descent all the way down to Gangnani, a natural thermal spring.
